DeSantis Confirms Florida's 2026 Redistricting Could Add 5 GOP Seats

Governor Ron DeSantis has confirmed that Florida's upcoming redistricting process in 2026 could result in a significant shift in the state's political landscape, potentially adding five Republican seats to its U.S. House delegation. This announcement comes as the state prepares for its redistricting following the 2020 Census, which has the potential to reshape the balance of power in Congress.

According to preliminary projections, Florida's U.S. House delegation could see a change from 2024, with Republicans holding 25 seats, an increase of five, while Democrats would be reduced to three seats, a decrease of five. This potential shift would effectively counterbalance recent Democratic gains in California, where Governor Gavin Newsom's redistricting efforts added five Democratic seats.

The proposed redistricting plan is expected to flip several districts currently held by Democratic representatives. The districts that could transition from blue to red include:

  • 10th District (Maxwell Frost)
  • 14th District (Kathy Castor)
  • 22nd District (Lois Frankel)
  • 23rd District (Jared Moskowitz)
  • 25th District (Debbie Schultz)

If these changes are implemented, the remaining Democratic representatives in Florida would include Darren Soto in the 9th District, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in the 20th District, and Frederica Wilson in the 24th District.

This anticipated redistricting comes amid ongoing discussions about the implications of political boundaries and representation in the state. As Florida continues to grow in population and political significance, the outcomes of the redistricting process will be closely monitored by both parties in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.

Governor DeSantis's confirmation of the redistricting process highlights the strategic importance of Florida in national politics, as both parties vie for control in a state that has become a key battleground in recent elections.
