Maher specifically mentioned President Joe Biden, who is currently the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, as a primary example of this trend. He also called attention to several other senior lawmakers, including Democratic Representatives Eleanor Holmes Norton, who is 88 and has reportedly shown signs of cognitive decline, and Steny Hoyer, who is 86. Maher noted that Norton was recently the victim of a scam, losing $4,000, which he suggested could be indicative of her declining faculties.
Additionally, Maher pointed to other prominent figures in Congress, such as Maxine Waters, who is 87, and James Clyburn, who is 85. He also mentioned Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, who at 92, represents the oldest member of Congress. Maher remarked, “These are all people that are not going to go away,” emphasizing his belief that their extended tenures may hinder the progress of younger leaders within the party.
While Maher acknowledged that the issue of aging lawmakers is not exclusive to one party, he noted that the majority of the individuals he cited are Democrats.
